Werk Tenna – Fort Tenna – Levico, Italy

History

Fort Tenna was part of The Fortress of Trento, which was the fortified wall built around the city of Trento starting in 1860 and strategically active until its dissolution in 1916. The purpose was to cope with possible threats of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy toward Trentino and South Tyrol in the second half of the 19th century, when this area was still under rule of the Habsburg Empire.

Fort Tenna and the nearby Fort Col de le Benne (Sperre Tenna) were both built between 1884 and 1890 as an advanced line of the Fortress of Trent to protect the strategic area of Pergine. Both Forts are built in the early Vogl style and the Trentino style. Together they blocked the passage through the Valsugana.

Fort Tenna today

Fort Tenna is much easier to find than Fort Colle Delle Benne. It is situated at the most southern side of the town of Tenna. The fortress was under restoration in 2009 during our visit. A fence secured the construction site. The restoration is said to have completed in 2012.

To find more fortresses in this region take a look at sir Moeslang’s website.
Just under the picture of the lady shoe, is a bit of text, rather small with an “kmz” site, an “add on” for the Google earth software. It gives an interactive map with locations of the Fortresses / Werk and the Moeslang site with information and photo’s.
