The Eastern Front of World War II was the theater of conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, beginning with Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941. It was characterized by large-scale battles, high casualties, and extensive destruction. Major engagements included the Siege of Leningrad, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the Battle of Kursk. Harsh weather, logistical challenges, and attritional warfare defined the campaign. The Soviet Union gradually pushed German forces westward, culminating in the fall of Berlin in May 1945. The Eastern Front significantly contributed to the outcome of the war in Europe.
