In 1942 Adolf Hitler ordered the construction of the Atlantic Wall (German: Atlantikwall) to shield Nazi-occupied territories against a possible Allied invasion from the West.
This resulted in the building of an extensive system of coastal defenses and fortifications between 1942 and 1944 along the coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia during World War II.
Although many structures have fallen into the ocean or have been demolished over the years, many remnants of the Atlantic Wall can still visited today.
