During World War Two this observation post M2a bunker was one of the fire control posts for Coastal Battery Moltke, which lies a bit further inland. This post was connected to observation post M2 and the Kriegsmarine Messtellung und Peilstand 3 or short MP 3 observation tower, which were part of Stützpunkt Butts further to the North. Together they directed the fire of the four gun emplacements armed with French 15,5 cm K418 (f) of the battery.
Next to the M2a bunker is a pillbox with a Tobruk which was accessible through a concrete tunnel.
VISIT
The M2A Observation post and Coastal Battery Moltke are situated on top of a cliff overlooking St Ouen’s bay to the West. It soars high above Stützpunkt Etacquerel at the northern tip of the bay. It has a beautiful walkway up north towards Stützpunkt Butts and the MP 3 observation tower. There is a parking lot nearby. The Gun emplacements are always open for they are unfenced and outside.
There is also a little subterranean museum under Gun Emplacement number 4. Check out the website of Jersey bunker tours or other websites for opening hours or tour information. Gun emplacement no. 4 is near the parking lot. Another option is walking to or from Stützpunkt Butts, it’s just a short walk.
