This Messerschmitt Bf 109 was formerly an E-3 type but after an accident on 27 November 1940 it was upgraded to an E-4 type. This Messerschmitt Bf 109 was produced by the Maschinenwerk GmbH in Leipzig Germany on 28th November in 1939. With registration Black 8 and later with Red 5, it flew with II/Jagdgeschwader 77. After the upgrade to type E-4 it was transferred to I/Jagdgeschwader 77, this time with registration Black 2, to fight at the Eastern front.
The plane was hit during combat near Murmansk and the Messerschmitt Bf 109 had to make an emergency landing on a frozen lake. The pilot could save himself before the plane disappeared into the lake.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 has werknummer: 1407 and was restored after it was pulled out of the lake 1993. When it was discovered it carried registration Red 5 and Black 2. It kept Red 5 as registration and was seen on display in the Deutsches Technikmuseum, Berlin in 2016.
