The Lorraine Type 72 Personnel Carrier was a French military vehicle developed during the late 1930s and early 1940s, primarily designed to transport infantry and small crews across rough terrain. Based on the chassis of the Lorraine 37L artillery tractor, the Type 72 was adapted to serve as a lightly armored tracked vehicle capable of carrying soldiers in various combat and support roles.

Powered by a 6-cylinder gasoline engine producing about 110 horsepower, the Lorraine Type 72 had a maximum speed of approximately 25 to 30 km/h (15 to 18 mph) and a range of 120 km (75 miles) on roads. The vehicle’s tracks provided excellent cross-country mobility, making it effective for navigating the rough and often muddy conditions of the front lines. Lorraines that were repatriated into German service were upgraded with a stronger and more reliable engine.

The personnel carrier could carry up to 12 soldiers along with the driver, offering a safe and mobile transport option for infantry during combat operations. The vehicle’s lightly armored superstructure provided protection from small arms fire and shrapnel, but it was not intended to withstand heavier artillery or anti-tank weapons.

The Lorraine Type 72 was primarily used by the French Army during the early stages of World War II and was later captured and used by German forces following the fall of France. Despite its limited production, it played a role in increasing infantry mobility during the war.
