Don “Doc” Rowe: Citizen. Soldier. – a book by Dennis W. Rowe

In October 2023 author Dennis Rowe reached out to us to ask if he could use a photo of Landmarkscout for a book about his father’s life. Don “Doc” Rowe was a Combat Medic who served in the American 9th Infantry Division, 39th Infantry Regiment during World War Two. Of course we were honoured to contribute.

The book follows an American GI and combat medic on his personal and transformative journey during World War II’s Mediterranean and European battle campaigns, based on the correspondence with his wife.

Married to Montez on 3 June 1942, Don entered the U.S. Army the next day. His enlistment marks the start of a three-year correspondence with each other, while both endured modern history’s most all-encompassing global conflict. Linked by love, commitment, courage, and resolve, both supported the other during “Doc’s” life-changing odyssey through North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, France, Belgium, and Germany.

The true story describes the horror and consequence of battle through his eyes as a medic, how he earns the Silver and Bronze Stars and gives us an understanding of why he and his peers have come to be known as the “Greatest Generation”.
