The Crusader III AA Mk III was a British self-propelled anti-aircraft tank used during World War II, based on the Crusader III chassis. It had a crew of 4 and was armed with twin 20 mm Oerlikon autocannons mounted in an open-topped, fully rotating turret, providing rapid fire against low-flying aircraft. Powered by a 340 hp Nuffield Liberty V-12 engine, it had a top speed of 44 km/h (27 mph) and a range of 160 km (99 mi). With up to 51 mm of armor, it offered moderate protection, but the open turret left the crew exposed to enemy fire.
Primarily deployed in North-West European theaters after the Normandy landings, the Crusader III AA saw limited action as the German Luftwaffe’s declining presence reduced the need for dedicated anti-aircraft tanks.
The Crusader III AA Mk III Tank in the pictures was photographed in Musée des Blindes, Saumur, France.
