In 1934, the Carl Walther Waffenfabrik (Eng: Arms factory) developed the semiautomatic pistol Model HP (Ger: Heerespistole), which in terms of design and function was simply an enlarged version of the earlier Walther PP model. By integrating a new locking breech patented by the Walther Company in 1936, the AP model (Ger: Armeepistole) was created.
Around 200 AP pistols were manufactured for testing by the German Wehrmacht, but the handgun was never taken into mass production.
